Shaun Donovan, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, will present a keynote address at this year's ceremony.

2010 Honorees

Stewart B. McKinney Award

This year, NLCHP is proud to present the 2010 Stewart B. McKinney Award to New York Times best-selling author Barbara Ehrenreich.  Ms. Ehrenreich is a prolific writer whose numerous books and articles promote awareness and understanding of the social issues surrounding poverty.  For example, in Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America, Ehrenreich gave millions of Americans a glimpse into the lives of the working poor. And last year, her New York Times article, "Is It Now a Crime to be Poor?" investigated the criminalization of poverty and homelessness across the country.

Bruce F. Vento Award

The 2010 Bruce F. Vento Award will be presented to the Education Law Center of Pennsylvania, with whom the Law Center achieved two major victories for homeless children earlier this year. Their partnership with NLCHP in these lawsuits helped ensure that the more than 43,000 students who experience homelessness in Pennsylvania each year will have access to stable education, which we know is essential for homelessness prevention.

Pro Bono Counsel Award

Dechert LLP will receive the 2010 Pro Bono Counsel Award. The firm's pro bono support has been integral to helping prevent and end homelessness in the U.S. Their recent pro bono work has addressed issues related to unaccompanied homeless youth, access to education for homeless children, and the human right to housing.
