Now Accepting Nominations!

The National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty (NLCHP) is seeking nominations to recognize and honor a formerly homeless individual for his or her personal achievement in overcoming adversity at the 2008 McKinney-Vento Awards ceremony.

Each year, NLCHP selects an individual who has experienced homelessness to receive the Personal Achievement Award to recognize his or her accomplishments and service to those still experiencing homelessness.

All nominees should meet the following criteria:

  1. Encountered difficulties in obtaining services or benefits that would allow him/her to get an education, training, or pursue other goals that would ultimately lead to employment and/or stable housing. This can also include efforts that helped his/her family be more secure and stable such as access to childcare, education, or other services that had a significant effect on the family as a whole.
  1. Overcame barriers to obtaining services or benefits with the help of a local service provider that, ideally, included guidance from NLCHP. We welcome nominees in any of our program categories: Civil Rights; Children and Youth; Human Rights; Housing, Income, and Services; Base Closure and Surplus Property; or Domestic Violence.
  1. Has a success story to tell and is willing to speak in front of an audience at the 2008 McKinney-Vento Award ceremony this fall. NLCHP will cover the honoree's travel expenses to attend the Awards event.

If you would like to nominate an individual for the award, please email Katherine Bittner with a brief, one-page description of the candidate, detailing how they meet the above criteria.

The deadline for nominations is May 15, 2008.

The National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty (NLCHP) created the McKinney-Vento Awards to recognize individuals or organizations that have advanced solutions to homelessness and poverty.  These awards also pay tribute to two outstanding national leaders in the fight to end homelessness, Stewart B. McKinney and Bruce F. Vento.  Four awards will be presented at this years event: the Stewart B. McKinney Award, Bruce F. Vento Award, Pro Bono Counsel Award, and Personal Achievement Award.
