Washington Post Profiles Law Center Attorney

Heather Johnson Discusses Her Passion for Civil Rights Work

The Washington region is a magnet for civil rights lawyers in the public and private sectors.  Law Center Civil Rights Attorney Heather Maria Johnson is among the most notable.

After working at Latham & Watkins in environmental law and litigation for several years (mostly with corporate clients), she took on a pro bono assignment with the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty: a legal challenge to a law that made it illegal to be homeless.

"I became engaged in the work the Law Center is doing," she said, calling it "more vital, much more interesting."  As she explored a move to the nonprofit world, the Law Center's long-time civil rights attorney, Tulin Ozdeger, departed to spend time with her young son.
