NLCHP Executive Director Maria Foscarinis participated in the inaugural conference of the International Network for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR-Net), Creating New Paths Towards Social Justice, in Chiang Mai, Thailand from the 8th to the 11th of June 2003. She spoke about homelessness in the U.S. and NLCHP's legal advocacy to prevent and end it.
ESCR-Net is a new collaborative initiative among groups from around the world working to ensure all peoples fundamental human rights, including the right to food, shelter, education, health, and social security. It arose from what ASCR-Net identified as the "explosive growth" in recent years in organizations and individuals working to promote economic, social and cultural rights and the resulting need for a structure to share information, develop new strategies, and work together on concrete projects. The new network hopes to develop a collective voice, amplify efforts to eliminate poverty, and advocate for economic, social and cultural rights at all levels. Some 300 groups and activists from around the globe participated in the conference. Mary Robinson, the former President of the Republic of Ireland and former United Nation's High Commissioner for Human Rights gave the keynote address.
