Homelessness and Food Stamps: Rights and Barriers

The food stamp program has been a vital safety net for homeless and low-income individuals.  However, national studies have shown that the program is not reaching many homeless people.  Less than half of the homeless population receives food stamps although most are likely eligible.

Common barriers that homeless people face to receiving food stamps include:

  • Transportation;
  • Lack of knowledge about the program;
  • Mental illness;
  • Lack of a mailing address to receive notices and other information from the food stamp office; and
  • Lack of documentation.
