Solutions Through Alternative Remedies
Practical Models to Help End Homelessness
While the causes of homelessness are complex, the lack of
affordable housing and lagging incomes remain significant reasons for the
growing number of homeless people in our country. Other factors include
difficulty obtaining public benefits, lack of affordable healthcare, or
domestic violence.
As homelessness has increased, services have decreased, and
many local governments are enacting policies that criminalize being a homeless
person instead of fighting homelessness itself.
This report contains numerous case studies of cities that
are successfully combating homelessness through constructive and innovative
means. Each example can be replicated and actually addresses the root causes of
homelessness.
The areas discussed in the case studies include:
alternatives to criminalization, housing programs that move people out of homelessness,
improving access to housing for domestic violence victims, helping homeless
children succeed in school, and helping homeless individuals obtain public
benefits such as food stamps and supplemental security income.
