Housing, Homelessness, and Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is a primary cause of homeless in the United States. A major obstacle a survivor of domestic violence faces when trying to leave an abusive relationship is finding housing independent of their abuser.

This publication addresses the problems domestic violence survivors face when they attempt to obtain housing.  Some of the obstacles they face include:

  • Gender discrimination;
  • The inability to break a lease;
  • Eviction from a lease or expulsion from a shelter because of the violence committed against them; and
  • A lack of expedited housing vouchers.

The document also discusses the role of attorneys in assisting domestic violence survivors in these situations.
