A New Feminization

Why Homelessness is a Women's Issue

This article argues that homelessness is increasingly becoming a womens issue because women make up an increasing percentage of the overall homeless population and they are disproportionately represented among the poor.

At the same time, the federal government has all but abandoned its commitment to house the poor and resources available to the poor and homeless have almost disappeared.

The article also argues that while women have less access to resources there are greater obstacles to entering the job market.  Women have trouble entering the labor pool because of the increased expense of childcare.

This article recommends that vacant housing units be converted into affordable housing, that the minimum wage be increased, and that federal benefits be expanded.
