Sample Local Educational Agency (LEA) Policy

Implementing the McKinney-Vento Act

The McKinney-Vento Act requires all state and local educational agencies to develop, review and revise their policies to remove barriers to the enrollment and retention in school of children and youth experiencing homelessness.  This sample LEA policy is designed to help school districts comply with this mandate.

The policy was adapted from the existing policies of LEAs around the country, the requirements of the reauthorized McKinney-Vento Act and Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), and U.S. Department of Education regulations and guidance.  It may be abbreviated or otherwise adapted to accommodate the needs of any LEA.
