Children's Right to Housing Endorsement
U.S Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA) has introduced H. Res. 582, which expresses the sense of Congress that children, youth, and their families have a right to housing. The National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty is working with Rep. Waters in support of passage of the Resolution. If your organization would like to support the Resolution, please contact us at nlchp@nlchp.org to sign on to this endorsement. Please also call or email your Representative and ask them to co-sponsor H. Res. 582.
This endorsement statement reads as follows:
In the United States, an estimated 1.5 million children face homelessness each year and millions more live in housing that is substandard, overcrowded, or otherwise inappropriate. A July 2009 report by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development found that approximately 27% of homeless families lacked even emergency shelter. As a first step towards ensuring housing for all Americans, the undersigned organizations call on the U.S. House of representatives to pass House Res. 582 to recognize a right to housing for children and their families, and to implement that right through meaningful policies and funds.
