School Legal Checklist for Compliance with the McKinney-Vento Act
Education of Homeless Children & Youth
The purpose of the McKinney-Vento Act is to ensure that all homeless children and youth have equal access to the same free, appropriate public education, including public preschool education, provided to other children and youth.
This checklist is arranged by obligation under the McKinney-Vento Act, to assist school districts (or in the terms of the McKinney-Vento Act, Local Education Agencies or LEAs) in ensuring they are doing all they can to facilitate the enrollment, attendance, and success in school of homeless children and youth.
