Connecting Homeless Students to Special Education Services

A Guide to Rights and Resources

This document outlines how to connect homeless students with special education services.

Many children and youth experience physical and learning disabilities that make it difficult for them to reach their full potential.  Some of these disabilities include blindness, speech problems, and dyslexia.  However, schools can change their classrooms and education plans to meet their unique needs and provide them with an opportunity to succeed.

Homeless youth with physical and learning disabilities face an even greater challenge.  In at least half of the states in the United States homeless students have trouble accessing special education services.

Changing schools frequently and not knowing their rights are the two primary reasons why homeless students may not receive the help they need.
