District of Columbia Interim Disability Assistance (IDA) Program

This document explains the Interim Disability Assistance Program which provides temporary financial support to low-income residents with disabilities while they apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Under IDA, DC is able to take advantage of a provision of the Social Security Act that permits federal reimbursement of locally-funded assistance to individuals who ultimately qualify for SSI.

The IDA legislation emerged from a series of conversations involving service providers, legal advocates and the D.C. Department of Human Services (DHS).

As a result, IDA was designed to streamline administration, reduce waste, and maximize recovery of federal revenue.
